DELHI 2 DUBLIN

About DELHI 2 DUBLIN

Delhi 2 Dublin continues to break the mold with the release of its new genre-busting album, Planet Electric, on May 4th 2010, and the subsequent Planet: Electrified, a collection of remixes. They describe Planet Electric “as the buzz of the world that they are plugging into some large socket to electrify the people, to charge up their energy”. To capture that dynamism, all of the tracks on the album were road-tested in front of live audiences before being recorded. Something else the band did differently from the last album was going on a writers’ retreat where they worked on the music day and night for ten days straight. The results are definitely more representative of Delhi 2 Dublin as a band and a noticeable progression. The icing on the cake was being able to get Diamond “DJ Swami” Duggal (Apache Indian/Maxi Priest/Nusrat Fateh Ali) to mix the tracks.

Hour Magazine wrote that “Delhi 2 Dublin is the United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”. The Vancouver, Canada-based band plays an energetic mash-up of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub, Reggae and Electronica with global rhythms and club beats. Tarun Nayar, Sanjay Seran, Andrew Kim and Ravi Binning, along with Sara Fitzpatrick, are diverse in both their backgrounds and musical influences. The album title is apt because the six musicians feel that they plug directly into the world’s music and energy.

As a live collaboration put together in 2006 for a one-off performance piece at a club night called Delhi to Dublin, the group was so well-received that requests for additional performances led to the official formation of Delhi 2 Dublin. “Not being able to fit into any specific genre allows the band to create whatever we like and not be judged for it. Our audience expects nothing less.” The band finds this advantageous for their live show as it enables them to create a flow to their sets much like a DJ would for the dance floor. “Audiences love to see a band transcending stereotypes and letting the music speak for itself”.

“The highlight of the night was a performance by a group called Delhi 2 Dublin. Imagine the energy and cultural fervor of a huge Indian wedding party colliding with a bunch of drunken Irishmen dancing on a wooden table with fiddles! Delhi 2 Dublin has created their own niche at the intersection of gritty hip hop and electronic beats, traditional Indian influences and that raw Celtic sound that packs a punch – all of which make you want to get up and dance.” Evolving Music

“Delhi 2 Dublin is non-stop world beat energy. Where else can you see a purple haired fiddle player rocking out with a kilt-wearing Korean flanked by two bouncing bhangra percussionists and a vocalist who looks like he would be at home in a Bollywood music video? This live performance was all about energy. Delhi 2 Dublin captured the crowd --- holding us all hostage. The band couldn’t seem to contain their enthusiasm. So what does Dehli 2 Dublin sound like? Well, they sound like what you would expect from a group who describes themselves as playing Delhi and Dublin fusion music --- electric sitar, Celtic fiddle, electronic mixing, reggae, Punjabi and English vocals and a whole bunch of percussion on the likes of the tabla and dhol.” Melophobe “Delhi 2 Dublin is the new sound of music. Blending east and west, electronic and acoustic, mainstream and underground, the five member D2D crew takes listeners on a wild and borderless trip with their global sounds. The band fuses the traditional sounds of tabla, dhol, fiddle, and sitar with cutting edge DJ aesthetics, to create a highly charged multi-cultural dance celebration.” Oh Snap

“Delhi 2 Dublin was quite a hit and has a great future. Their mix of Bhangra, hip hop and Celtic fiddle music was the perfect antidote to the humdrum mood of a gray day. Their lead singer, a young Indian, had sufficient personality to keep the crowd animated, and behind him was a diminutive yet dynamite young lass of a fiddle player. Backing them up was a guitarist who dabbled successfully in a sitar and a man who banged an enormous drum called the dhol.” Seattle Examiner

“Combine the Indian drums (tabla, dhol) and sitars of the subcontinent with driving Irish fiddles and toe-tapping Celtic progressions, keep the dynamics fluid with bhangra world beat soundscapes and you've got Delhi 2 Dublin. The Vancouver-based electronic world fusion quintet's first studio release surprises most when the diverse sounds ooze together, like on "Stage 5," where a Brazilian berimbau (stringed bow and gourd) and West African djembe (hand drum) join the sitars and synth, or the sunny highlife/rumba vibe of "African Odyssey." Core tracks like "Dil Nachlde," "Celtic Dub" and "Get on the Bus" are just that, bridging Indian chants, that infectiously upbeat fiddle and the various synthesized modulations. The home-grown blend comes off as fresh, addictive and jig-inducing.” Exclaim Magazine

“The Vancouver-based collective combines dhol, fiddle and breakbeats in an Irish/Asian stew that is surprisingly varied, a marvelously wide-ranging and free-thinking concept.“ BBC
